MegaGamers fanboy incident
Many great stars have abrubtly ended their carreers for unknown reasons at their height either through suicide or just managing to retire and be quiet. In addition to the names of Garbo, Valentino and Marilyn, there is also Erika Hayasaka, who at the end of a performance scolded her fans with the announcement "that what you all loved is a lie." and then marched off into obscurity.
At this point in her career Erika was the voice actress for the lead role in the Anime series "Girl Phase" and had severeal high selling records, the last of which was called "Broken Bird." She apperently did no more work for recording companies, but did some jobs on the side for gaming companies as a booth babe or model for game design. And she got a job as a clerk in a small out of the way game/comic store.
There is speculation that she smashed her carreer over the loss of Hitoshi, her finace. The recording companies made up their own explinations, but Erika herself kept quiet and mostly unobtrusive. She may have had a period of self destructivlness that lasted for quite some time, until her friend Kimiko calmed her down.
Even though Erika ended her career, she did not end her status as an Idol. Lots of her fans still loved her and still wanted her to come back. Even though she, like Poe's Purloined Letter was hidden in plain sight very few recognized her. She worked in a game store and lots fo her fans saw her and failed to recognize her. This might be due to the fact they refused to believe that the Great One would be working in a store, or that her personality changed dramaticly differently from her public persona.
But for one fan, Probably Dom, the penny dropped, and he spread the news everywhere. And as the news spread the horde of Erika fans decended on the game shop like locusts.
At the same time as the Fanboy horde deceneded on the store, Ed was trying to eliminate Ping. While Erika prepared to meet the horde in the store, Largo brought his class to disperse the Fan Horde, as he had been brought to the understanding that Erika didn't want to deal with them. As Junko and the rest of the class were dealling with the fanboys, Ed let loose a a series of bolts from a plasma rifle that missed Ping, but took out several building and a Rent-A-Zilla, until he was himself taken out by an orbtal plasma rifle.
Erika, seeing the destruction, raced out to see if she could help the wounded, but was instead mobbed by the fan horde, who oblivious to destroyed buildings, wounded Zillas and angry androids still wanted a piece of her. Piro's attempt to rescue her ended in humiliation, as she was obliged to rescue him.
The Horde seems to have been dispersed by the Tokyo Police Cataclysm Division. The scariest of the Horde, Man Moeko, was routed by Kimiko's frank admiration of his sewing skills.
After the end of the Riot, Erika told Kimiko that Piro had been hurt defending her. Piro was in the bathroom nursing a broken nose and a crippled ego when Kimiko came and tried her nursing skills on him, with results that might have been fatal if he hadn't gently pushed her out the door.
After Piro cleaned up and went back to the store, he and Kimiko cleaned it all up, and had a nice long chat about the reason for Erika ending her carreer and who she became after it was all over.
